As an Approved Activity Provider (AAP) we offer DofE expeditions cruising on our yachts. The expedition training on board is immediately followed by the expedition. Our experienced and qualified skipper / assesors work with the young people and stay on board for the duration. Groups of young people looking to do their expedition are advised to contact us early as both our boats can become very busy during peak season.
If you are an individual and not part of an existing expedition group we will be running “Open Expeditions” where we do all we can to help build an expedition group from other interested individuals.
Expedition content includes navigation, how to sail the boat, position fixing and passage planning, IRPCS, weather, anchoring, man overboard procedure, reefing, how to cater on board, general safety, distress situation and knots/rope work.Equipment and Kit Information
The centre owns two modern yachts; a Salona 38’ – “Santa Vey” and a Salona 37’ – “Somerled”. Both yachts are fully equipped and inspected yearly by the RYA/MCA. Yachts will be staffed by one member of staff, either a male or a female instructor. All instructors are PVG checked.
Waterproof sets and lifejackets are on-board each yacht. All other clothing is the responsibility of the sailor and we recommend bringing warm comfortable clothing, which is easy to layer, a warm hat, gloves, suitable footwear, towel and toiletries and of course suntan lotion.×
For your expedition section you will need to plan, train for and complete an unaccompanied, self-reliant expedition with an agreed aim.
As with all expeditions you will have an aim to the expedition, we can discuss this prior to coming along with your project suggestions. It will be worth bringing any additional resources required for your aim and project. We shall contact you before your expedition.
The expedition must be completed by the students own physical efforts with minimal external intervention. Once the expedition begins our instructor is there for advice and safety reasons. Students are expected to step up as the instructor steps down.
Food will be supplied by the centre for the first 5 days for the remainder 4 days students will be given a monetary float to buy provisions.×
