A gentle introduction, teaching you the basics of windsurfing over two days, so you can turn the board around sail where you want to go to and get back to shore. With a bit of practice during & following this course, you'll soon start to feel comfortable afloat.
This course works towards the RYA Start Windsurfing certificate and covers launching, steering and landing. The course follows the basics of sailing techniques and stance, it also include the basics of self rescue techniques and how to windsurf safely. A small amount of theory relating to weather, tides and sailing theory is also covered.
Cumbrae has a full range of Tushingham sails from 4.0m to 7.0m for the Intermediate and Advanced courses, 3.0 – 4.5m Trainer sails and Kidi rigs as small as 2.5m. All boards are HiFly or StarBoard and are in a range of sizes. The boards, rigs and sails are replaced on a regular basis maintaining quality equipment. Harnesses are also provided.
Getting wet is unavoidable so we will make sure you have the correct gear. A wetsuit, wetsuit boots, buoyancy aid and waterproof top is available for your use and can be dried overnight ready for the next day’s action. In addition we would request you bring garments such as swim wear, woolly hat and warm socks – even in July! Hot showers are available in the changing areas and accommodation areas so bring a spare towel too.×
On arrival check in at our reception which is situated in the main entrance. You will be asked to complete a form with course and emergency contact details. A room key will be issued for residential guests and a brief outline of Centre facilities indicated.
Main timings of our day are:
Lunch: 1230hrs. For residential guests - Breakfast: 0830hrs & Dinner: 1800hrs
All meals are served in the dining area.
Activity times. Your activity will run from 0930 – 1630hrs.
Your instructors will guide you with clothing, activity and the content of the sessions.
Residential Guests: Evenings are generally free time unless your course has specific tutelage incorporated or activities have been pre-arranged.
If you are on a single day course the 0915hrs ferry from Largs to Cumbrae will get you here in sufficient time and plan for the 1730 return crossing.×
