A busy practical course with lots of time on the water. Candidates will be trained to safely complete high speed and low speed manoeuvres. Other boat handling training includes berthing in a variety of conditions, securing to moorings, reversing and turning in confined spaces and what to do if someone falls overboard. All you need to become a safe and competent boat handler.
Short shorebased sessions will also cover other aspects of boating and navigation on the sea. On successful completion candidates will be awarded the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate, widely recognised and accepted as the "driving licence" for powerboats.
Includes RYA Powerboating handbook.
Our powerboats serve two purposes at Cumbrae. Much of the time they are used as the safety vessels accompanying our on the water activities. At other times they are used for delivering the qualifications required to become active in safety duties, instruction or use of personal power crafts.
The 5m ribs are used for RYA courses such as powerboat level 2, safety boat and powerboat instructor. The larger 6m and 6.8m can used for advanced powerboat course with and without commercial endorsements and advanced powerboat instructor.
Often people bring their own waterproof clothing for this course. If you do not have your own set of waterproofs the Centre can provide. We provide buoyancy aids and at times it may be required to be prepared to go into the water and the Centre will provide wetsuits, wetsuit boots. In addition, we would request you bring garments such as swim wear, woolly hat and warm socks, suitable footwear and helmsman gloves. Hot showers are available in the changing areas and accommodation areas so bring a spare towel too.
