The West Coast of Scotland is the best cruising area in the British Isles, with remote anchorages, strong tidal influences and dramatic scenery. These cruises provide excellent opportunities for logging miles and furthering sailing experience. This year the outgoing passage will be between Largs and Oban and the return Oban to Largs. These cruises offer excellent opportunities for building experience, rounding two major headlands at the Mull of Kintyre, separating Scotland from Ireland and Ardnamurchan, Britains most westerly point.
A must do cruise if you have long wished to sail round the Mull of Kintyre. This passage gives good distance sailing and passages that have to be which has to be planned in accordance with wind & tide. Between Islay and Jura you can experience up to 8 knots of tide so it is essential to passage plan accurately. The chance to encounter wild life is exceptionally good as there are sea eagle nesting sites and seal colonies. For a bit of extra excitement you may even sail close to the famous Corryvreckan whirlpool.
Although this is not listed as an RYA certificate course our instructor will be focused on improving everyone’s seamanship skills and knowledge. The sailing experience gained should be logged towards future RYA certificates that sailors may be aiming towards.
