Discover Sea Kayaking

2 days

Age 16+

This 2 day introductory course is aimed with the beginner in mind.

As well as introducing you to the skills required to control your kayak we will also spend time discussing the pro’s and con’s of different sea kayak designs and allow you to try out a selection of boats.

We will make this course as practical as possible and will take part in 2 day journeys. You will receive coaching along the way, making the best use of time and the conditions to allow you to practice manoeuvring and exploring in your sea kayak. The sea will be our classroom and we will discuss tidal and weather considerations and how these may help or hinder you as a sea kayaker.

As well as techniques for controlling your sea kayak we will also discuss and practise some simple rescue techniques and familiarise you with the rescue protocols used in UK waters.

All our sea kayak coaches are passionate about the outdoor environment and we hope that by the end of the two days you will leave with a heightened enthusiasm for the sport and the confidence and skills to control your sea kayak.

Equipment and Kit Information

Paddlesports has been voted the fastest growing water-sport in the UK for the 4th year running and we are proud at sportscotland Cumbrae to be at the heart of these developments. The Centre is in a perfect location for Sea Kayaking and we have a wide range of modern equipment from some the UK’s leading manufactures including P&H Sea Kayaks & Werner Paddles.

Getting wet is unavoidable so we will make sure you have the correct gear. Peak UK wet-suit, wet-suit boots, buoyancy aid, spray deck and cag top is available for your use and can be dried overnight ready for the next day’s action. You are of course welcome to use any of your own equipment, just run this past your coaching team. Time will be spent on this course talking through appropriate clothing; making sure you are aware of what is best for the sea conditions you are likely to encounter.

You may also want to bring garments such as swim wear, woolly hat and warm socks – even in July! Hot showers are available in the changing areas and accommodation areas so bring a spare towel.

Plastic. The time is right to highlight the devastating effect that plastic is having on our fragile marine environment. In an effort to reduce this burden we are making small steps and ask that our customers refrain from bringing plastic bags or plastic bottles on this course. Pack lunches will be provided and opportunities to fill up water bottles and flasks will be given at the start of the course.
