The sportscotland National Watersports Training Centre Sea Kayak Festival takes place this August, the weekend will include the Great Cumbrae Sea Kayak Race, and is set to be celebration of sea kayaking in Scotland.
Previously known as the sportscotland Sea Kayak Symposium, the festival will bring together paddlers of all ability and ages, and will include practical workshops, guest speakers, demonstrations of latest kit, and time to relax and enjoy the beautiful island setting with a BBQ. The weekend promises to be fun, entertaining and informative and it is our hope that the sea kayak festival attracts old and new paddlers alike.
A variety of workshops will be available and including: fundamental boat handling skills, getting in tune with your sea kayak, rock hopping, day paddles with open crossing, practical navigation and incident and rescue management. The event has over the course of 3 years attracted some of the UKs leading coaches and expedition paddlers, and it is hoped this year’s event will welcome back previous participants while welcoming a new contingent of paddlers to this wonderful sport
After the sessions and the race on Saturday, we will be offering a BBQ and opening the bar, where participants of the festival can relax and unwind. Scottish based expedition paddler, Olympian and ultra-endurance athlete Patrick Winterton has been confirmed as guest speaker for the Saturday evening, and will be recounting tales of a number of his expeditions and his rise to success within the sea kayak racing scene. Patrick has been successful in long distance and daring crossings, being the first to paddle from Scotland to the Faroe Isles and successfully paddle across the North Sea from Scotland to Norway.
On Saturday morning we are offering a session in efficient forward paddling & safety, building up to Saturday afternoon, when the well-established Great Cumbrae Sea Kayak Race will take place. Participants will be able to sign up for a day ticket which includes this morning workshop, lunch, the race and a social BBQ and evening talk. It really is a festival to look forward to.Equipment and Kit InformationDaily Schedule
