The Coach Awards are designed for people who wish to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within a chosen discipline. This may include, for example, technical/tactical skill development, physical/psychological development, or helping people develop the skills so they can paddle safely without the need for a coach. The coach is able to plan, deliver and review progressive sessions safely, effectively and independently.

Coaches within sea kayak (moderate water) award are able to coach the discipline specific foundation skills and help people to develop their skills in defined environments, taking into account the technical, tactical, physiological and psychological elements of performance. They will also be able to coach discipline specific foundation and introductory flat-water skills.

Their repertoire should include the coaching skills to develop discipline and environment specific techniques and tactics relevant to foundations (Active Posture, Connectivity, Power Transfer, Feel), launching and landing, forward paddling, steering, turning and manoeuvring and recovery from being off balance, recovery from capsize, safety and rescue skills.

The syllabus is based on the knowledge, understanding and skills that the coaches need to ensure the athletes/learners in their care are appropriately provided for. This includes assessing athlete/learner performance and needs, designing and delivering progressive practice/training sessions to meet these needs, managing safety, creating an enjoyable motivating learning environment, skills to support your own personal learning and professional development.

Equipment and Kit Information

British Canoeing Sea Kayak Coach Training - Kit Info

Paddlesports has been voted the fastest growing water-sport in the UK for the 4th year running and we are proud at sportscotland Cumbrae to be at the heart of these developments. The Centre is in a perfect location for Sea Kayaking and we have a wide range of modern equipment from some the UK’s leading manufactures including P&H Sea Kayaks & Werner Paddles.

Getting wet is unavoidable so we will make sure you have the correct gear. Peak UK wet-suit, wet-suit boots, buoyancy aid, spray deck and cag top is available for your use and can be dried overnight ready for the next day’s action. You are of course welcome to use any of your own equipment, just run this past your coaching team. Time will be spent on this course talking through appropriate clothing; making sure you are aware of what is best for the sea conditions you are likely to encounter.

You may also want to bring garments such as swim wear, woolly hat and warm socks – even in July! Hot showers are available in the changing areas and accommodation areas so bring a spare towel.

Plastic. The time is right to highlight the devastating effect that plastic is having on our fragile marine environment. In an effort to reduce this burden we are making small steps and ask that our customers refrain from bringing plastic bags or plastic bottles on this course. Pack lunches will be provided and opportunities to fill up water bottles and flasks will be given at the start of the course.
