Whilst this is a classroom-based course we will endeavour to make it as practical as possible. After an introduction to the instruments we use for trip planning (including dividers, plotters, almanacs and maps and charts) we will hand over the learning to you and get hands on. Specific attention will be made to tidal predication and in particular; the way to work out tidal flow rates. We will also spend a proportion of time studying weather forecasts and how the forecast dictates where and when we can leave on trips.
This course is made up of a mixture of lectures and practical sessions and by the end of the day you will leave with 2 sea kayak trip plans which we hope you can use in the future.
This course is particularly popular with club paddlers who want to gain a solid grounding in the foundations of tidal predictions and weather forecasting.
Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning - Equipment Information
Paddlesports has been voted the fastest growing water-sport in the UK for the 4th year running and we are proud at sportscotland Cumbrae to be at the heart of these developments. The centre is in a perfect location for Sea Kayaking and we have a wide range of modern equipment from some the UK’s leading manufactures including P&H Sea Kayaks & Werner Paddles. Our coaching team are all experts in seamanship & navigation and are at hand to offer supportive learning throughout this classroom based course.
As well as charts and suitable publications, we will supply pencils, plotters and dividers. You are of course welcome to use any of your own equipment, just run this past your coaching team. Time will be spent on this course talking through which publications are a “must have” and which ones which we can leave on the bookshelf.
Plastic. The time is right to highlight the devastating effect that plastic is having on our fragile marine environment. In an effort to reduce this burden we are making small steps and ask that our customers refrain from bringing plastic bags or plastic bottles on this course. Pack lunches will be provided and opportunities to fill up water bottles and flasks will be given at the start of the course.×
