This Conquer Kintyre cruise follows in the wake of the Vikings who claimed ownership of land by sailing around it. By dragging their Longships across at Tarbert (Norse for “boat drag”) they claimed the Kintyre Peninsula. Nowadays the Crinan Canal makes traversing the land easier and much more enjoyable! This cruise allows you to “conquer” the Kintyre Peninsula for yourself by rounding the Mull of Kintyre and passing through the beautiful Crinan Canal. Which way round you will go is dependant on the forecast and the tides.Given fair winds a visit to some of the nearby islands, Islay, Jura, Gigha and Rathlin should be possible
This week of sailing will give an all round insight into the skills required for passage planning and a journey through the canal. Wind and tide must be considered for the passage around the Mull and on approach to Crinan. There are methods and plenty of tips we can give you on how to take a boat through the canal and make it easily manageable even with few on board. Crinan Canal is very pretty especially at the time of year for this cruise as it is lined with deciduous woodland and wild flowers. The route taken will encompass sailing via the Kyles of Bute or alternatively around the west tip of Bute, Garroch Head. This is a great circular route that give variety and valuable skills.
The course price includes the canal fee, accommodation onboard, fuel, food, berthing fees, waterproofs, equipment and tuition.
