RYA Event Safety Workshop
The Racing Rules of Sailing (Rule 1 and 4) as well as most standard sailing Instructions confirm that a boat accepts that it is entirely responsible for her own safety. Nevertheless, the RYA has sensibly reviewed and developed its own operating procedures for the overall management of the safety of those competing in RYA-organised events.
Cumbrae’s David Frame was tasked by the RYA to produce a safety workshop to share the information and resources that the RYA produced for it's own events. “We spent a lot of time looking at the safety issues and it was immediately obvious that there would be benefits to anyone or any club involved with event safety. The large events we were planning for did not actually affect the robustness of the safety plan, but merely the quantity of the resources needed to implement it. After pulling all this best practice together it made sense to share it”
All the information is available but the days workshop will add a lot more sense and understanding to what has been produced. We also wanted the opportunity to explain WHY. Just providing access to the information could lead to misunderstanding, not really what anyone wants when you are out on the water dealing with safety.
The workshop includes access to all the documents and presentations that we compiled; Safety Briefings, Risk Assessments, Contingency Plans, Tactical Positioning, Event Structure, Communications. All these have been produced in a generic way so that people with a responsibility for their own event safety can adapt them for their own needs.
The Safety Workshop is relevant to anyone involved or connected with safety at their events, from the Race Officers to Beachmasters, rib crews to safety leaders. Any individuals, clubs or classes in Scotland who would be interested in the one day workshop should contact David Kent, Scotland’s Regional Race Management Coordinator on 01475 670 011 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
