Olympic Preparations

Recently Cumbrae Instructor David Frame has travelled the length of the country from the Clyde to Cornwall running the RYA’s National Mark Laying seminar. Assisted by Andy Gibb, also form Cumbrae, and the RYAs Ed Stevens, there are now a further nine National Technical Officers trained up by Cumbrae as part of the build up for the 2012 Olympics.

Gordon Bamford and Dean Gillespie form Largs attended the seminar at Largs Sailing club and are part of the team that will be working on the Olympic Laser and Laser Radial course. Four other members of the Laser Team were also trained at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club a week later. Other candidates involved with both seminars have race management roles on the Olympic 470 and womens Match Racing course areas. Jeff Martin the Olympic Laser Race Officer observed the seminar in Cornwall witnessing the training his team was being put through. As an experienced International Race Officer he was able to add valuable input to the seminar he admitted also to having learnt a lot and was impressed with the training that his team was put through

The Cumbrae led seminars are only part of the 2012 Olympic preparations. All the teams are working together over as many events as possible this year. In the case of the Olympic Laser race management team they had the opportunitiy to practice together at the RYA UK Youth National Championships in April and will come together again for The Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in June and the Olympic Test Event in August. Many of the individuals in the team have already contributed at Sail For Gold and the Laser Worlds in 2010. By the time 2012 comes along they should be ready for anything!
