In August 2015, Daniel Smith, a Senior Yachting and Watersports Instructor for sportscotland Cumbrae set off on a 40,000 nautical mile circumnavigation of the planet as a Skipper in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. At the time of writing (March’16) Dan and has team have just recorded an impressive back to back, clean sweep win in the race, after taking line honours in ‘The Sailing City Qingdao Cup’. Dan is leading a crew of amateur sailors on board one of twelve 70 foot matched racing yachts on the Northern Irish sponsored entry Derry~Londonderry~Doire.
It’s an exciting period for both the skipper and Cumbrae, with Dan’s performance truly augmenting the international reputation built up by the centre over the years.
Daniel began sailing at the age 5 on the family’s 26ft yacht. He had many adventures and as he developed his skills he began sailing in single handed classes at the local sailing club. Firstly it was an optimist and this introduced him to the racing element of sailing. Getting a taste for this he went on into the laser 4.7 and then the full rig training with the Scottish Squad. Daniel likes to dowell in his sport and this is not always measured through rankings at national events but more by the effort and attitude he applies.
He is probably spurred on most by the dynamics of the sports - Windy days for sailing and windsurfing and fast flowing rivers for paddling. It is the speed and excitement that our Instructor Daniel enjoys. His involvement at the centre over the past 10 years has allowed him to access a range of equipment and he has put this to good use improving his personal skills. He is an extremely well qualified instructor and is the real deal.
Daniel rates his main achievements as sailing across the Atlantic and windsurfing proficiently in high winds, the later he does as regularly as possible. He has a fun nature and applies this to his teaching across the age spectrum. He is a key link with schools bookings and he brings a lot of life and fun to junior and youth courses at the centre.
On a free afternoon, given the choice to get afloat with any piece of equipment Daniel would select his windsurfing kit if it was windy and if it was calm he would opt for his scuba gear.
Daniel brings to the Centre fun and quality learning in a laid back environment.
