Sail For Gold

1,000 athletes, from 56 different countries competing in a fleet of over 800 boats, this was without doubt the largest ever dinghy racing event that the UK has ever staged Seven different race management teams are needed to run the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in the Olympic waters.

This year saw some of the Largs SC Members (Alistair Leicester, Dean Gillespie and Gordon Bamford) fresh off the back of the Laser World championships join the Cumbrae team heading south. They also, linked up with Matt Toynbee, formerly at Cumbrae and now based at Port Edgar.

Cumbrae’s David Frame was the event Safety Officer and ran both the Mark Layers and the Safety Team briefings “Having a quiet week is always a good week in this role” says David, However, it does have its moments when the “Code Red” comes over the radio, as you never know what to expect.”

David Kent was kept busy on the match racing course, setting short but very accurate courses using three different windward marks. An amazing 186 races were completed with both the ISAF Technical Officer and competitors praising the Race Management
Rod Smith worked with the the Paralympics fleets. According to Rod, “With so many different fleets racing at the same time. It’s great being very close to the action and we endeavour to make the course as accurate as possible. Every window of opportunity has to be used, to tweak the course, whilst ensuring not to impede any competitor.

Cumbrae’s Malcolm Kelly was supported by Alistair Leicester, Dean Gillespie and Gordon Bamforth from Largs SC. They were assigned to the laser race area which created a feeling of dejavu having just spent 2 weeks laying trapezoid courses at Largs for the Laser Worlds event. Matt Toynbee was positioned on the 470 course at the looking after the outer loop of the course.
